-
Welcome
-
Tulpehocken Township was erected at the time
-
Lancaster County was formed. In 1734, the first
-
subdivision occurred in the Tulpehocken Settlement, when
-
Heidelberg Township was established. The concentration of
-
settlers in this particular section of territory and the
-
influence generated through Conrad Weiser, played
-
aleading role in obtaining the legislative action. As a
-
result, these frontier folk acquired better representation.
-
Although a few homes had been established at the time the
-
first settlers arrived, on and near the western boundary
-
line of this newly created district, it was not until 1728-
-
1729, that the real infiltration of pioneers began to enter
-
into this Township. It was named after Heidelberg, a
-
beautiful old university town, located in southern Germany
-
from where some of these Palatines had emigrated. Again,
-
Conrad Weiser must have had a strong voice in the
-
selection of this Township’s identification. It also was an
-
indication of the political power that Conrad wielded and
-
the high esteem in which the Provincial government held
-
him even at this early date.
-
Today Heidelberg Township has a population of 1741
-
with 23.55 miles of Township road and 15.11 miles ofstate
-
road, totaling 38.48 miles of road. The Township road
-
crew is responsible for all Township roads and the state is
-
responsible for state roads. Our area has always been
-
known for its scenic beauty and well-kept farms. The
-
farmers in the area are progressive, keeping abreast of the
-
latest research and technology.
-
The Township is bordered by: Marion Township
-
(west), North Heidelberg Township (north), Lower
-
HeidelbergTownship (east), South Heidelberg Township
-
(southeast), and Millcreek Township (southwest).
